Wolfram Weimer seeks compromise for Cranach-Triegel Altar

Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer has called for a compromise regarding the permanent location of the Cranach-Triegel Altar within the Naumburg Cathedral. The dispute centers on whether the artwork, which features a completion of a 16th-century altar by painter Michael Triegel, should remain in its original setting.

The United Cathedral Founders advocate for the altar to stay at its place of origin in the UNESCO World Heritage site. However, the international council Icomos argues that the piece obstructs the view of the cathedral's famous high-medieval donor figures.

Due to these ongoing disagreements, the altar was moved from Naumburg to Rome in late October 2025. It is currently displayed at the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà near St. Peter's Basilica and is expected to remain in Rome until 2027, by which time a consensus on its final placement in Naumburg is intended to be reached.
