Wolfsburg pursues economic diversification amid Volkswagen crisis
The city of Wolfsburg is pursuing a strategic economic diversification plan titled ‘Wolfsburg 2035+’ to reduce its heavy reliance on the automotive industry, specifically Volkswagen. The initiative aims to establish the city as a resilient and technology-driven hub by focusing on four key growth sectors: medical technology, security and civil protection, urban technology, and the circular economy.
In the medical sector, Wolfsburg is strengthening its position through the Wolfsburg Clinic, which utilizes robotic surgery and hybrid operating rooms, and a partnership with University Medicine Göttingen (UMG). This collaboration includes the Wolfsburg Medical Campus, serving as a research and teaching site.
This shift comes as Volkswagen faces significant structural challenges, including declining sales and competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. The company is undergoing massive cost-cutting measures, with projections suggesting over 35,000 job cuts at German sites by 2030. Because approximately one-third of Wolfsburg's workforce is directly or indirectly employed by Volkswagen, the city's economic stability is closely tied to the manufacturer's ability to navigate its current crisis.
