Wolin East oil field discovery in the Baltic Sea awaits regulatory review

A significant conventional oil and gas deposit has been discovered in the Baltic Sea near Świnoujście, Poland. The Wolin East field, discovered by the Canadian company Central European Petroleum (controlled by Norwegian investors), is estimated to contain approximately 22 million tons of oil and 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Total resources within the entire Wolin concession area could exceed 33 million tons of oil and condensate and 27 billion cubic meters of gas.

Despite the scale of the discovery, extraction is not imminent. The Ministry of Climate and Environment stated that the project is currently in the exploration and recognition phase. While Central European Petroleum submitted a request to approve geological and investment documentation on November 7, 2025, this is not a formal request for an investment decision to begin production. The Ministry is scheduled to review the submitted documentation by September 30, though a definitive timeline for the start of extraction cannot yet be established as the investor has not yet applied for the necessary permits to begin the mining phase.
