Wollongong infrastructure and housing development discussions

Wollongong City Council has released artist impressions of a new stepped seawall for North Wollongong Beach. The $10.5 million Stage 2 project is designed to protect historic buildings along the promenade from rising sea levels and wave action. However, the project has faced local concern regarding beach encroachment; the new concrete structure is expected to extend approximately 12 metres into the sand in certain sections, potentially reducing the width of the beach.

Separately, Business Illawarra has highlighted a need for increased residential density to address local labor shortages. Director Coralie McCarthy stated that businesses are struggling to attract workers due to a lack of available housing. The 'Homes for Workers' report suggests fast-tracking affordable housing projects in Gwynneville and Bellambi and increasing urban density to protect surrounding natural areas while ensuring housing affordability and supply.
