Wollongong residents protest MacCabe Park skate park proposal

Residents of Wollongong have organized rallies to protest the proposed construction of a skate park in MacCabe Park. While opponents stated they are not necessarily against skate parks in general, they argue that the central business district location is inappropriate. Concerns raised by protesters include the loss of green space, potential increases in urban heat, noise, and the impact on the park as a place for relaxation.

Protesters, including Patricia O'Brien and Jane Robertson, emphasized that for children living in high-rise apartments, public parks serve as essential backyards for nature and development. There is also a dispute regarding the size of the project; opponents claim it will occupy 2,500 square metres of grass, while the council maintains the facility will be 1,500 square metres, representing less than 3 per cent of the park's total area.

In response to the community feedback, the Wollongong City Council announced it will develop a master plan for MacCabe Park over the next year in consultation with the community. Meanwhile, the group Friends of MacCabe Park has launched a discussion paper led by urban planner Dorte Ekelund to explore future possibilities for the park.

Public sentiment remains divided. While protesters gathered in person, social media commentary has shown significant support for the project, with residents arguing that a skate park provides necessary activities for local youth and utilizes existing space effectively.
