Braunschweig brewery and Salzgitter hospital face closure after failed insolvency bids
The Hofbrauhaus Wolters brewery in Braunschweig, founded in 1627, will cease production by December 31, 2026, following a failed search for investors during insolvency proceedings. The closure, driven by declining beer sales and rising costs, will result in approximately 90 job losses. While the production site is closing, discussions are ongoing regarding the potential survival of the Wolters brand under a new ownership structure.
In a separate development, the St. Elisabeth-Krankenhaus in Salzgitter-Bad has also closed its doors after failing to secure an investor. The hospital's closure, effective September 30, 2026, impacts 250 employees and creates a significant gap in regional healthcare services. Management cited difficult industry conditions, including rising operational costs and healthcare reforms, as primary reasons for the inability to continue operations.
