Wolves causing concern for residents and farmers in Italy
Wolf activity is causing concern for residents and livestock farmers across different regions of Italy. In the Cremona area, a wolf nicknamed ‘Lupo Gianni’ has become increasingly bold, appearing near residential properties and moving up to 30 km in a single night. Provincial Police have issued warnings to residents against feeding the animal or attempting to contain it, noting that such behavior creates dangerous habits in wildlife.
In the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola valleys, farmers are reporting direct impacts from predators. Slow Food producers near Monte Rosa have reported wolf attacks on calves, forcing them to move livestock from high-altitude pastures to warmer, lower elevations. These farmers are facing a combination of challenges, including predator threats, drought affecting hay production, and heavy bureaucratic requirements.
