Woman charged after newborn found in Sydney rubbish bin

A 24-year-old woman has been charged after the body of a newborn baby boy was discovered in a rubbish bin in Auburn, western Sydney. The infant was found naked inside a rubbish bag in an apartment block bin on Harrow Road by a resident on August 31.

Following an investigation by Strike Force Alenor, police identified the woman believed to be the mother. After being taken to a hospital for assessment, she was arrested upon her release and taken to the Auburn Police Station. She has been charged with “mother alone conceal birth by disposing body”.

Acting Commander Darren Sly stated that the infant may have been in the bin for up to 36 hours, though it remains unclear if the baby was alive at birth. The woman has been granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on October 27.
