Woman critically injured after lightning strike in Poland's Izera Mountains

On 20 June, a 38‑year‑old woman identified as Ania was struck by lightning while cycling near the Orle shelter in the Izera Mountains, Lower Silesia. Her husband, who was with her, rescued her and called for assistance; mountain rescue teams from GOPR arrived promptly.

Ania suffered severe injuries including head trauma, damage to lungs and liver, and extensive burns. She was air‑lifted to a hospital in Wrocław, where she remains in intensive care. Her husband has reported that they have no current contact with her.

The incident highlights the dangers of sudden thunderstorms in mountainous areas and the rapid response of local rescue services.
