Woman dies after being burned by ex‑partner in Maceió, Brazil

Ana Paula Oliveira da Silva, 43, died on Saturday after a week of intensive care at the Hospital Geral do Estado (HGE) in Maceió. She had been attacked on June 26 when her ex‑partner drove her into a forested area, doused her with gasoline and set her on fire. The flames covered more than 90% of her body, causing severe burns, loss of vision and hair. Despite emergency treatment in the intensive care unit, her condition remained critical and she did not survive.

Police arrested the suspect hours after the assault. The investigation, initially filed as attempted femicide, is expected to be reclassified as femicide after the victim’s death. The case highlights ongoing concerns about gender‑based violence in Brazil.
