Alice Springs holds funeral for Indigenous girl whose death sparked riots

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Alice Springs to hold a funeral for Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old Indigenous girl whose death in April sparked violent unrest and riots in the Northern Territory town. The community has been observing “sorry business,” a traditional mourning period, following the child's death. Jefferson Lewis, 47, has been charged with her murder and two other offences.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously called for improved living conditions in the camp communities on the outskirts of Alice Springs, where many Indigenous residents face inadequate housing and services. The girl's disappearance in April had prompted one of the largest searches in the territory's history.

In a separate incident in the Northern Territory, a woman in her 30s died at the Ubirr Lookout in Kakadu National Park. Police are treating the death as non-suspicious and are preparing a report for the coroner. The site was briefly closed to visitors following the incident.
