Woman dies by suicide in Barishal following alleged abuse during video call

A 27-year-old woman, Jhumur Khanam Setu, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday after consuming poison in Agailjhara, Barishal. The incident occurred on Sunday night while she was on a video call with her husband, Shaharia Kazi, who is currently working in Kuwait.

The victim's father, Abdul Karim Khan, alleged that Jhumur had been subjected to continuous mental torture by her husband and his family members since her marriage five and a half years ago. Allegations include harassment regarding wedding dowry, the number of guests at the wedding, and her physical appearance.

According to family accounts, the abuse intensified after the husband moved to Kuwait, involving his mother and sister. On the night of the incident, the husband reportedly used the video call to verbally abuse her and allegedly provoked her to commit suicide by consuming poison.

Local police in Agailjhara stated that no formal written complaint has been filed yet, but they will initiate an investigation once a report is submitted.
