Woman shares personal struggle with interreligious marriage and family estrangement

A woman named Myriam shared her personal experience regarding the challenges of an interreligious marriage. Having met her partner in her early twenties, she initially kept the relationship secret to avoid being disowned by her practicing Muslim Algerian family, as her partner comes from a Catholic Sicilian background.

After an initial separation, the couple reunited and married in 1992. However, the union resulted in significant familial estrangement. While her husband's family accepted the relationship, Myriam's parents and several siblings refused to attend the wedding or acknowledge the marriage. This led to a five-year period during which her parents did not speak to her and were absent for the births of her first two children.
