Woman Unknown wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded with the Danish drama ‘Woman Unknown’, directed by May el-Toukhy, winning the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film. The film, which explores the social consequences and public humiliation faced by women in post-WWII Denmark following relationships with German soldiers, was the only film in the main competition directed solely by a woman.
Mathilde Arcel received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her lead role in the film. Other major award winners include John Malkovich, who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for ‘Wild Horse Nine’, and Ilya Khrzhanovsky, who earned the Silver Lion for Best Direction for ‘DAU’. The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Lee Chang-dong for ‘Possible Love’.
The festival, presided over by Maggie Gyllenhaal, also recognized the documentary ‘NAZA’ with a Special Jury Prize. The victory for ‘Woman Unknown’ is noted for its historical depth and its focus on the female experience during and after wartime.
