Women artists and activists featured in new Mexican exhibitions

Two distinct exhibitions in Mexico are highlighting the roles of women in art and social activism. In Mexicali, the Baja California Secretariat of Culture has inaugurated “Mujeres creadoras. Lírica de la resistencia” at the CEART Mexicali International Gallery. The exhibition features 52 pieces by 30 artists, including works by Leonora Carrington, Sofía Bassi, and Cordelia Urueta. The collection explores themes such as surrealism, abstraction, female corporeality, identity, and social roles, utilizing pieces from the SHCP collections and local Baja California heritage.

In Mérida, photojournalist Lilia Balam will open “Mujeres que luchan” at the Museo de la Ciudad on November 4. This photographic exhibition consists of 22 color images documenting protests, forums, and assemblies in Yucatán, Chiapas, and Mexico City. The work focuses on collective action and the defense of human rights, addressing issues such as gender discrimination, feminicides, and reproductive rights through the lens of social memory and organization.
