Colombia's lupus patients are overwhelmingly women, GSK data shows

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) reports that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in Colombia affects 91.9 people per 100,000 inhabitants, and women comprise nine out of ten of those patients, particularly those aged 15 to 44. The autoimmune disease can damage skin, joints, kidneys and the heart, producing symptoms such as intense fatigue, joint pain, swelling and various skin changes. Diagnosis requires medical evaluation and blood tests, while treatment aims to control disease activity, prevent flares and avoid organ damage. Although there is no cure, adherence to therapy and regular monitoring are essential for managing the condition.
