Women elected to lead Navajo and Seneca Nations in historic victories

Crystalyne Curley has been elected as the first female president of the Navajo Nation. Curley, who previously served as Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council, won by a narrow margin of approximately 1,115 votes. Her opponent, Justin Jones, has stated he will not concede and intends to pursue legal challenges, alleging procedural irregularities and claiming he will challenge various sections of the Navajo Nation Code.

In a separate historic election, Tina Abrams has been elected President of the Seneca Nation, becoming the first woman to hold the nation's highest office. The election also saw women elected to the positions of Treasurer and Clerk, marking the first time women hold all three elected executive offices in the Seneca Nation. Abrams, who has served on the Seneca Nation Council since 2001, stated her goal is to lead with strength, honesty, vision, and conviction.
