Women in Brazil face mental health risks from multiple roles

Data released by Brazil’s Ministry of Social Security indicates that over 60% of work absences due to mental health disorders among women are linked to an accumulation of multiple responsibilities. This includes professional duties combined with motherhood, domestic management, and the 'invisible mental load' of family care.

Instituto Revoar, the social arm of Rede Memorial Fortaleza, warns that this overlap of roles contributes to rising rates of anxiety and burnout. Experts note that the constant need to anticipate family needs and manage household organization can lead to persistent fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

Elaine de Tomy, vice-president of Instituto Revoar, emphasized that society must stop normalizing female exhaustion. She noted that while managing multiple roles is often viewed as a sign of strength, it becomes a significant mental health risk when it occurs at the expense of emotional balance.
