Women Lawyers Association holds legal clinic in Malawi

The Women Lawyers Association (WLA), supported by the Clooney Foundation for Justice, conducted a legal clinic in Kazguli Village, Karonga, to improve human rights awareness and access to justice. The initiative targeted the remote area due to its difficult geography, which often prevents residents from accessing essential services and legal information.

The clinic provided training for first responders on managing survivors of violence and established guidance for reporting and referral procedures. Local officials noted that the region has faced significant challenges, including 54 reported cases of gender-based violence, 27 child marriages, and seven cases of elderly abuse between 2025 and 2026.

This effort aligns with a new partnership between the Clooney Foundation for Justice and the Malawian Ministry of Justice, as well as the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability, and Social Welfare, to advance the rights of women and children in the country.
