Women leaders honored in Brazil's São Pedro da Aldeia and Penedo awards

On July 31, São Pedro da Aldeia hosted the 12th edition of the Dandara Guerreira Prize, an initiative that recognises Black women from the municipality and the Região dos Lagos for their contributions to Afro‑Brazilian culture. The ceremony, organized by the Associação de Mulheres Afrodescendentes Nair de Souza (AMANS) and supported by the municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance and Human Rights, featured remarks from Fernanda Costa, director of the Department of Human Rights, who highlighted the event’s role in promoting racial equality, and Luzia de Souza, AMANS president, who praised the honourees’ resilience and leadership.

Later the same evening, in Penedo, Alagoas, Ivana Toledo received the “Mulheres do Ano” medal. Toledo, a former secretary of Social Assistance, three‑term first lady of Penedo and current councilwoman, was lauded for her long‑standing work in social services, advocacy for women, children, the elderly, LGBTQIA+ community and broader social inclusion. The award ceremony took place at the Meraki auditorium and was presented by the newspaper Alagoas na Mídia.
