Muscle mass preservation and functional strength prioritized over aesthetics

Health experts and public figures are emphasizing a shift in fitness priorities from aesthetic goals to functional strength and the preservation of muscle mass. This focus is particularly critical for women as they age to combat sarcopenia, the natural loss of muscle tissue that begins around age 30 and accelerates after 50 due to hormonal changes like menopause.

Maintaining muscle is framed as a necessity for long-term autonomy, mobility, and metabolic health rather than just a matter of appearance. Functional strength is defined by the ability to perform daily tasks—such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or getting up from the floor—rather than by muscle definition or weight.

To mitigate muscle loss, experts recommend incorporating resistance training, such as using weights, elastic bands, or bodyweight exercises, two to three times per week. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) inspired by martial arts is also highlighted as an effective method for full-body conditioning.
