Women's football expands through amateur growth and professional independence

Developments in women's football are taking different forms through both amateur grassroots movements and professional structural shifts.

In Argentina, amateur football five tournaments like Copa Queens, Fem Futbol, and Viva las chicas have provided essential “safe spaces” for women to compete without judgment. These organizations have seen exponential growth; for instance, Copa Queens has expanded from eight teams to 11 divisions involving over 1,000 competitors.

In the United Kingdom, Bristol City Women is pursuing a model of professional independence. Following an agreement in September 2025 with Mercury13 to purchase the majority of the club, the team is transitioning from a department of Bristol City FC into a standalone sporting entity. Under CEO Hannah Buckley, the club is doubling its staff and developing its own commercial, financial, and marketing departments to prove a women's club can thrive without being tethered to a men's professional structure.
