Women's health: Menopause market reaches US$350 billion potential
A growing global focus on menopause and perimenopause highlights a significant gap between consumer demand and medical satisfaction. A study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) involving over 10,600 people suggests that the unmet needs of women in these stages represent a US$350 billion opportunity in the global longevity market. Despite being the most active consumers of longevity products—spending a median of US$84 monthly—satisfaction levels among these women remain around 50%.
At the World Menopause Congress in Rio de Janeiro, experts discussed the economic and social implications of this transition. By 2030, it is estimated that over 1.2 billion women worldwide will be going through menopause. This demographic shift poses challenges for public policy and workplace productivity, as many women experience symptoms during their peak working years.
Health professionals, including pharmacist Marián García, have noted that symptoms such as musculoskeletal issues can affect up to 80% of women, yet many remain undiagnosed or misunderstood. There are calls for better training among healthcare providers to address the complexities of perimenopause and to provide more effective, updated therapeutic recommendations.
