Mexico legislators and health experts advocate for menopause support
Mexican Senator Lizeth Sánchez García has spearheaded a movement to destigmatize menopause and improve healthcare for women. During a recent forum in Puebla, Sánchez García outlined a three-pillar strategy to build a support network, which includes bringing medical information to rural municipalities via local DIF systems, reviewing the legal framework for women's health, and implementing standardized medical protocols to improve data collection and care.
Medical experts, including Dr. María de Lourdes Basurto Acevedo, highlighted the significant physical and mental toll of the transition. Data from the Mexican Association for the Study of Climacteric (AMEC) indicates that over 60% of women experience physical and mental exhaustion, while more than half suffer from irritability, sleep disturbances, and joint or muscular pain.
Beyond individual health, specialists warn of broader socioeconomic implications. As the female population ages, the lack of adequate menopause management poses risks to productivity, pension systems, and public health budgets. A regional study involving over 2,000 workers across twelve Latin American countries further demonstrated that severe menopausal symptoms are linked to lower job satisfaction and decreased quality of life in the workplace.
