Women's health: Navigating menopause and sexual changes

Menopause and perimenopause present various physical and psychological challenges for women, including hot flashes, mood swings, weight changes, and shifts in sexual health. These transitions can impact self-confidence and dating experiences, particularly as women navigate changes in body image and physical comfort.

Dr. Gina Zarella notes that sexual function is a complex intersection of hormones, anatomy, blood flow, nerves, psychology, and relationships. While declining estrogen and androgen levels play a role, other factors such as relationship dynamics and exhaustion also contribute to changes in libido. Dr. Zarella explains that many women may experience a shift from spontaneous desire to responsive desire, where sexual interest develops following stimulation or intimacy.
