Kajal Dhochak and Neelam Sirohi win silver at World Wrestling Championships
Indian wrestlers Kajal Dhochak and Neelam Sirohi secured silver medals at the World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, marking a historic milestone for the country. This achievement represents the first time two Indian women have competed in the finals of the same World Championships edition.
In the 76kg category, 18-year-old Kajal Dhochak, making her senior World Championships debut, narrowly lost a closely contested final 6-8 to Ukraine’s Anastasiya Alpyeyeva. Dhochak had previously demonstrated significant resilience in the semifinals, recovering from a 1-7 deficit to defeat Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy 10-7.
In the 50kg category, 26-year-old Neelam Sirohi faced Japan’s four-time world champion Yui Susaki in the final. Sirohi lost the bout by fall after trailing 0-5. Her path to the final included a 7-3 semifinal victory over Kazakhstan’s Zeinep Bayanova.
These podium finishes build upon the precedent set by Anshu Malik, who reached the World Championships final in 2021. The dual silver medal performance stands as a landmark moment for Indian women’s wrestling.
