Women's roles evolve in gaming leadership and participation
The gaming industry is seeing a significant shift in female participation and leadership. In the United Kingdom, women now represent approximately 51% of online gamers, according to Ofcom’s Online Nation 2024 report, up from 46% in 2022.
While women are increasingly entering development and leadership roles, challenges remain. Data indicates persistent concentrations in non-technical departments, reports of sexism, and a funding landscape that often views female founders as higher risk. Despite this, the UK gaming market reached a value of £7.82 billion in 2024.
In the corporate sector, Vickie Chen, CEO and co-founder of AviaGames, has been recognized for her leadership in mobile gaming. Chen, who received the Platinum Award for Outstanding Chief Executive Officer at the TITAN Women in Business Awards in 2026, has focused on skill-based mobile competition through titles like Solitaire Clash and the recently launched Mahjong Rumble.
