Women's safety concerns persist in the Netherlands

A recent study in the Netherlands reveals that 79 percent of young women aged 16 to 34 feel unsafe when outdoors after sunset. Despite increased public awareness and safety campaigns like ‘Claim the Night’, many women report that experiences of street harassment and intimidation remain persistent. Approximately 78 percent of young women surveyed reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment this year.

The discussion surrounding female safety intensified following the murder of 17-year-old Lisa in Duivendrecht while she was cycling home. The suspect, Chris Jude, was identified as an undocumented immigrant residing in a nearby asylum seeker center. This case sparked significant national debate regarding asylum policies and women's security.

In response, various municipalities have implemented practical measures. Amsterdam has identified over 160 vulnerable routes requiring improved lighting and maintenance. In Ouder-Amstel, authorities have modified cycling paths by removing overgrown vegetation and enhancing illumination. While social behaviors are shifting—such as young people using messaging apps to confirm safe arrivals or walking together—activists argue that these measures must be accompanied by deeper cultural changes to ensure lasting safety.
