Women's Solidarity Committees protest for free HPV vaccines in Turkey
Members of the Women's Solidarity Committees (KDK) held a protest in front of the Turkish Ministry of Health, demanding that the HPV vaccine be included in the national immunization schedule free of charge.
The protest follows recent comments by Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, whom the KDK accuses of making unscientific claims by stating that the HPV vaccine is unnecessary. The group argues that the government is prioritizing pharmaceutical profits over public health and women's lives.
According to the KDK, more than 2,000 women in Turkey are diagnosed with cervical cancer due to HPV annually, resulting in over 1,000 deaths. The protesters noted that while former Health Minister Fahrettin Koca had indicated in 2022 that vaccine studies were underway, no such program has been implemented for the general public.
