Women's urinary incontinence affects up to 50% of adult females

Urinary incontinence affects an estimated 10% to 50% of adult women, according to protocols from the Hospital das Clínicas da UFMG/Ebserh. Many women suffer from symptoms for six to nine years before seeking medical assistance due to social stigma and the misconception that leakage is an inevitable part of aging or motherhood.

There are several types of incontinence, including stress incontinence, which is triggered by abdominal pressure from activities like coughing or lifting weights; urge incontinence, involving a sudden, intense need to urinate; and mixed incontinence. Risk factors include pregnancy, vaginal delivery, menopause, obesity, and pelvic organ changes. Gynecologist Bruna Paschoalim emphasizes that the condition requires investigation as various treatment options are available.
