Women’s Voices Matter petitions Gender Ministry over rights and detention

The Women’s Voices Matter Movement has submitted a petition to Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, addressing several issues regarding women’s rights and welfare.

A primary focus of the petition is the detention of an individual named Salomey, who remains in prison after being denied bail. Protesters highlighted this case as a symbol of broader concerns regarding access to justice and the need for due process for women in conflict with the law.

Beyond the specific detention, the movement raised concerns regarding freedom of expression, constitutional rights, the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, and the delayed establishment of a proposed Women’s Development Bank.

In response, Dr. Lartey assured the group of the government’s commitment to advancing women's rights. She noted that a committee and secretariat have been established to support the Affirmative Action Act and stated that the Office of the Vice President is leading efforts to establish the Women’s Development Bank.
