Won Yoo-chul appointed special professor at Hankyong National University

Won Yoo-chul, a former five-term lawmaker and representative of the Mirae Hankook Party, has been appointed as a special professor at Hankyong National University. Following his appointment at the Pyeongtaek campus on January 21, Won delivered an inaugural lecture titled ‘The Future of Korea Opened by Pyeongtaek.’

During his lecture, Won highlighted Pyeongtaek’s critical role as an economic and security hub. He noted that the city houses the Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek campus, which accounts for 20% of the global DRAM market and approximately 25% of South Korea’s semiconductor exports. To maintain competitiveness in the semiconductor industry, he proposed flexible management of the 52-hour work week and the establishment of dedicated roads for semiconductor clusters.

Regarding security, Won emphasized Pyeongtaek’s importance as a base for the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, the Air Force Operations Command, and the Navy’s Second Fleet. He advocated for expanding South Korea’s economic territory by building a ‘Eurasia Silk Road’ to enhance logistics competitiveness, particularly in response to maritime instability.

On education, Won proposed a vision for regional development modeled after the California State University system. He suggested establishing a competitive national university system within Gyeonggi Province, utilizing the Pyeongtaek campus of Hankyong National University as a cornerstone for providing new educational opportunities.
