Wonder Man canceled by Disney+ despite successful first season

Disney+ has canceled the Marvel series Wonder Man after its first season, despite an initial renewal for a second season in March 2026. The decision, announced in July 2026, has surprised industry observers as the show was already in development for a follow-up.

Data from Luminate suggests the cancellation was driven by viewership and retention metrics. While the series performed well in raw numbers, it ranked fourth among Disney+ series in 2026, trailing behind Daredevil, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and The Mandalorian. Crucially, the show saw a 48% drop-off in viewers between the premiere and the finale, resulting in a 52% retention rate. This fell below the 53% threshold typically considered safe from cancellation for streaming originals.

Lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who received a 2026 Primetime Emmy nomination for the role, noted that the decision appeared to be based on viewership numbers and business logic. Despite the cancellation, the series remains critically acclaimed, maintaining a 91% critic score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
