Wonju City fails to secure approval for western transportation network expansion
Wonju City has failed to pass the preliminary feasibility study for the expansion of the western region transportation network, a project that has been stalled for 13 years since 2013.
The expansion is intended to connect the growing Wonju Enterprise City to the eastern innovation district. Currently, commuters rely on narrow two-lane roads, leading to severe bottlenecks during peak hours. The project is considered vital for improving industrial and logistics movement, enhancing access to highways, and supporting the upcoming opening of the second Wonju Yonsei Medical Center in 2028.
Additionally, the infrastructure is seen as necessary to improve accessibility to the Sogeumsan Grand Valley, a major tourist destination. While the Munmak-Heung-eop National Route 42 project passed the feasibility study, local concerns remain regarding the decision to expand existing roads to six lanes rather than constructing new four-lane bypasses.
