Wood cladding emerges as a key kitchen design trend for 2026
Interior design trends for 2026 indicate a shift away from traditional ceramic tiles in kitchens toward wood and wood-based panels. This change aims to create a warmer, more livable atmosphere that allows the kitchen to blend seamlessly with dining and living areas in open-plan layouts.
Designers are utilizing various wood elements, including paneling, cassette panels, plywood, and subtly profiled cladding. Rather than covering entire walls, wood is often applied to specific areas such as sections above countertops or around tall cabinets to enhance coziness without overwhelming the space. Modern applications favor narrower profiles, matte finishes, and lighter wood species, though deep tones like walnut or stained oak remain popular.
To maintain practicality, experts suggest combining materials. For instance, a stone ledge can be placed above the countertop to protect the wood from water and heat, allowing the wood cladding to begin in less high-traffic zones. Wood can also be painted in colors like cream, burgundy, or chocolate while retaining its natural texture to add depth to the interior.
