Wood framing dominates 94% of U.S. single-family home construction
Wood framing remains the dominant construction method for single-family homes in the United States. According to an NAHB analysis of 2025 Census Bureau data, wood framing accounted for 94% of all completed single-family homes in 2025.
While the market share for wood remained steady, the total number of wood-framed homes completed was approximately 947,000, representing a 1% decrease from 2024. In contrast, steel-framed homes saw a 25% increase, though they still comprised only 0.5% of the market with roughly 5,000 completions.
Concrete-framed homes maintained a 5% market share, though completions fell by 4% to approximately 53,000 units. Non-wood framing methods are most prevalent in the Southern United States due to residential resiliency requirements; concrete-framed homes accounted for 9% of completions in the South, and 60% of all steel-framed homes were built in that region.
