Wood pellet prices remain high in France ahead of winter

Wood pellet prices in France are failing to follow their typical summer decline, remaining on a high plateau as the heating season approaches. As of August 25, 2026, the national average price per tonne stands at €393, with regional variations ranging from €369 to €432.

Data from TotalEnergies indicates that prices have remained between €425 and €430 per tonne since April, missing the seasonal drop usually expected by consumers. This price resistance is attributed to rising fuel costs, which increase the expense of transporting raw materials and finished products to retail points. Additionally, demand remains high among households that transitioned to wood heating following the 2022 energy crisis.

While wood pellet stoves are recognized by ADEME as efficient, ecological supplementary heating options that offer stable operating costs compared to electricity, the current price trends pose budgetary challenges for households planning for the autumn and winter months.
