Woodcarver Lubomír Janoušek Marks 40 Years at Telč’s Prázdniny Festival

Lubomír Janoušek, a 70‑year‑old woodcarver from Výčap, has been a fixture at the Prázdniny festival in the historic town of Telč for four decades. Originally a machinist, he began selling wooden jewellery and later carved lime‑wood nativity scenes at the market, even under the communist regime where he had to obtain permits and price approvals from regional authorities.

Janoušek says the festival now draws many visitors, including tourists from Austria, and the exposure encouraged him to learn German and English. He continues to work from his home workshop, taking orders that keep him booked two years ahead. The 2026 edition of Prázdniny runs from 31 July to 16 August, featuring numerous traditional craft demonstrations.

He reflects that while the atmosphere has changed over the years, nostalgia and the chance to showcase his craft keep him returning each summer.
