Wooden cutting board cleaning trend poses bacterial risks
A popular social media cleaning trend involving soaking wooden cutting boards and spoons in boiling water may actually increase health risks. The UK consumer advocacy group Which? warns that this practice can damage wood, causing cracks and deformations.
These fissures can trap moisture and food particles, creating an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria and mold. While some users believe that brown-colored water indicates deep cleaning, experts clarify that the discoloration is often just the release of natural pigments and tannins from the wood.
To properly clean wooden utensils, experts recommend washing them after each use with hot water, dish soap, and a suitable brush or sponge, ensuring they are not soaked for long periods. It is essential to let the wood dry completely before storage or reuse. For persistent odors or stains, salt and lemon can be used as a surface treatment.
