Woolworths expands food offerings and sustainable supply chains
Woolworths is expanding its premium food offerings and strategic focus on its food division. In South Africa, the retailer has introduced nine new products, including overnight oats, BBQ beef ribs, and various specialty meal pots, to meet changing customer expectations for quality and variety. This expansion follows a strong financial period where food turnover and concession sales rose 5.7% to R55.37 billion. CEO Sam Ngumeni noted that the company is reorienting the group around its market-leading food business, which accounted for 66.5% of total turnover.
In Australia, Woolworths continues a long-standing, four-decade partnership with sustainable grower Flavorite. Utilizing advanced glasshouse technology, the partnership delivers approximately 5.6 million kilograms of produce annually. The operation employs a low-energy model featuring a circular water management system and carbon dioxide redirection to support plant growth. This high-tech supply chain allows fresh produce, such as tomatoes, to reach shelves within 24 hours of being picked.
