Woori Bank pushes profit growth with data‑driven strategy and AI rollout
Woori Bank reported a second‑quarter net profit of 842.1 billion won, a rise of more than 58 % from the previous quarter. The bank’s common equity capital ratio increased from 13.1 % at the end of 2023 to 15.3 % by June 2024, placing it among the strongest Korean lenders. Fitch Ratings subsequently upgraded its bank‑wide rating from A‑ to A.
At a management strategy meeting in Seoul, President Jeong Jin‑wan outlined a H2 plan centred on data‑based sales, cross‑division collaboration and tighter internal controls. The bank will reorganise sales territories using public and commercial data, and will deploy AI agents to accelerate customer analysis and service delivery. Woori’s digital platform, Woon Banking, now has over 9 million monthly active users, and the bank is expanding services such as Samsung Wallet Money, Woon FX and Woon SAFE.
An analysis of the group’s loan portfolio showed that, while overall corporate lending grew, Woori shifted focus to large‑enterprise borrowers, increasing large‑company loans by 19.79 % in the first half of 2024, while small‑business (SOHO) loans fell by 2.57 %. Small‑business loan delinquency rose to 0.75 % in June, the highest level since early 2018, indicating lingering credit‑risk concerns.
