Worcester police investigate murder-suicide of veteran officer and wife

Authorities in Worcester, Massachusetts, have concluded a multi-day manhunt following what they believe is a tragic murder-suicide involving a veteran police officer and his wife.

On August 18, Kurt Solomon, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department, was found dead in his home from injuries caused by a sharp object. His wife, Karen Solomon, a prominent mental health advocate and co-founder of the non-profit First H.E.L.P., disappeared from the scene. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for her, charging her with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Following an intensive search involving local, state, and federal agencies, Karen Solomon’s body was discovered on Monday in a wooded area near Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. Investigators found a handgun near her body, which was not a police service weapon, and preliminary evidence suggests she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier stated that while the case is being treated as a murder-suicide, there was no known history of domestic abuse between the couple.
