WordPress platform overview and development history

WordPress is a widely used open-source content management system (CMS) that powers approximately 43% of all websites. The platform originated from the decision by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little to create a new system following the discontinuation of the blogging program b2/cafelog. Since its public release on May 27, 2003, the software has undergone significant evolutions, including a revamped admin dashboard in 2005 and various usability improvements.

Users typically choose between two distinct versions: WordPress.org and WordPress.com. WordPress.org is the open-source software that allows users to host their own files, own their data, and install custom plugins or themes, making it the preferred choice for commercial businesses. In contrast, WordPress.com is a hosted service that offers varying tiers of service, including free plans that display advertisements and paid tiers for custom domains and third-party plugins.
