WordPress releases official MCP Adapter plugin for AI integration

WordPress has officially released the MCP Adapter plugin to the WordPress.org plugin directory. The plugin utilizes the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to connect AI assistants with external tools, data, and services.

By linking the WordPress Abilities API with MCP, the adapter provides a unified access method for compatible AI clients. This allows AI chatbots to perform routine website maintenance tasks—such as writing posts, uploading images, managing SEO fields, and assigning categories—through a conversational interface rather than manual backend navigation.

The plugin operates on an active disclosure mechanism; it does not automatically grant AI full access to a website. Administrators must explicitly define which capabilities are exposed to AI clients and manage the permissions for the accounts used. While the plugin facilitates automation, it does not inherently provide AI writing or operational features itself; rather, it provides the connection layer for existing AI tools to interact with the CMS.
