WordPress security requires shared responsibility between hosts and owners
Securing a WordPress website requires a shared responsibility between the web hosting provider and the site owner. Hosting companies are generally responsible for the security of the server, including the operating system, network, physical hardware, and server software patches. In managed WordPress hosting, providers often take on additional upkeep, such as WordPress updates.
However, the site owner remains responsible for the security of the WordPress installation itself. This includes managing plugins, themes, user accounts, and the files and databases within the site. A significant vulnerability in WordPress security is the reliance on passwords. Because of human memory limitations and security fatigue, users often create weak or reused passwords, which hackers can exploit through automated guessing tools.
To mitigate these risks, implementing two-factor authentication (2FA) is recommended to protect user accounts. Failure to secure these elements can allow hackers to gain access, install backdoors, send spam, or harvest sensitive user information.
