WordPress security vulnerabilities and HTTP referrer spam
Technical reports highlight common security challenges facing WordPress websites, including HTTP referrer spam and malicious redirects.
Referrer spam involves attackers spoofing the HTTP Referer header to generate artificial traffic, which can distort website analytics. This can be identified through server access logs and mitigated using Apache rewrite rules to block unwanted requests.
Additionally, WordPress sites may suffer from redirect vulnerabilities. These include open redirects, where untrusted input controls a destination URL, and malicious redirect infections caused by injected JavaScript, compromised plugins, or database injections. These attacks often redirect unsuspecting visitors to phishing sites, gambling websites, or malware distribution platforms.
