Workaholism and Smartphone Proximity Linked to Eye Strain and Burnout

Workaholism, a compulsive need to work praised as dedication, is driven by dopamine rewards and makes it difficult for people to disengage, leading to anxiety, guilt and mental fatigue. Psychologists advise recognizing the need for genuine rest and setting boundaries to avoid turning ambition into compulsive behavior.

Experts warn that holding a smartphone too close—typically less than 33 cm—can cause digital eye strain, dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and posture problems such as "tech neck." The American Optometric Association recommends a viewing distance of 33‑50 cm, and Apple’s iOS 17 Screen Distance feature now alerts users when the phone is held too near. The 20‑20‑20 rule (look 6 m away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) is also suggested to relieve eye muscles.

Both issues illustrate how modern digital habits can erode physical and mental well‑being, underscoring the importance of regular breaks, proper ergonomics and mindful work routines.
