Carrara marble worker Aldo Gullotti killed, unions call strike

Aldo Gullotti, a 44‑year‑old worker from Milazzo, died on the morning of 6 August after being crushed by marble slabs at the Santucci Group plant in Carrara, Tuscany. Emergency services arrived quickly but could not revive him. The fatal accident has triggered strong reactions from trade unions. The CGIL Tuscany branch described the incident with "rabbia e sgomento" and demanded a rapid investigation, stricter safety controls and the creation of a national labour prosecution office. On the same day, UIL, FILCA and other unions organized an eight‑hour strike across the marble district of Carrara and Versilia to press for improved workplace safety. The Movimento Cristiano Lavoratori (MCL) of Tuscany also called for concrete actions, noting that the region records one of the highest rates of fatal work accidents in Italy. Authorities have opened an inquiry to determine the exact causes and any liability.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about occupational safety in Italy’s marble sector, which has seen several fatal and serious injuries in recent years.
