Worker dies in mining accident at Mina do Sossego

A fatal industrial accident occurred on Sunday (23) at the Mina do Sossego in Canaã dos Carajás, Brazil, resulting in the death of 26-year-old maintenance inspector Iago Lima. Lima was an employee of the contractor U&M, providing services to Vale Metais Básicos for over five years.

Technical simulations of the incident indicate that the accident happened during corrective maintenance on an excavator. While using a truck-mounted crane (munck) and a lifting sling to support the excavator's ostick (a structural component of the arm), the sling snapped, possibly due to pre-existing wear or damage. The component fell, striking the worker in the torso. Lima was treated by medical teams and transported to a hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Vale Metais Básicos confirmed the fatality and stated that it has notified the relevant authorities and initiated an investigation. The company is providing support to U&M to assist the victim's family. The Mina do Sossego is a major copper extraction site in the region.
