Worker housing becomes key to industrial competitiveness in Vietnam

Vietnam's National Assembly is currently discussing amendments to the Housing Law to prioritize the development of rental and social housing for workers and low-income earners. Experts suggest that worker housing has evolved from a mere social welfare issue into a critical component of economic infrastructure and industrial competitiveness.

Architect Nguyen Thai Thuat Hien noted that foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction now depends on long-term operational stability. Industrial zones that provide complete living spaces—including housing, essential services, healthcare, and education—hold a distinct advantage in retaining labor and reducing personnel turnover.

Le Hoang Chau, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Real Estate Association (HoREA), highlighted the logistical burdens faced by companies like PouYuen Co., Ltd., which must organize daily shuttle services for workers. He noted that such temporary solutions incur high operational costs for businesses and diminish the quality of life for employees. There is a growing call for businesses to invest in residential areas on their commercial land to better support their workforce.
